The Dirt on Dirt

Using this resource group, students learn about what materials make up dirt. Sid and his friends discover that dirt is really important to the Earth because it helps things grow, and it's also filled with tiny rocks, pieces of leaves, and even living things like bugs and worms! The resource group includes eight video segments, including a live action segment, as well as an associated activity.

The Dirt on Dirt - Part 1

Sid wonders what in dirt makes things dirty! At breakfast, Sid's Dad walks through the kitchen holding a bag of soil and explains to Sid that it is a special type of dirt called potting soil, which helps plants and trees to grow. Sid and his Mom investigate on the computer to learn a little more about the different kinds of dirt. Sid gets the chance to see dirt from the yard, potting soil, and dirt from the desert and learns that they each look different and are made up of different materials!
